Less than a month remains until the reading period for WHEN THE HERO COMES HOME 2 officially begins. Ed and I are very excited to see what stories fate brings to our inbox — especially since so many people approached us at World Fantasy Convention to tell us that they’re working on their stories, or have finished them already!
So, if you’re submitting to Hero 2, here’s what you need to know: The procedure IS DIFFERENT for invited vs open submissions.
1. Invited submissions go to a different submissions address, as specified on the invitation letter. This is because:
2. We will be reading the open submissions BLIND. Between us, Ed and I have heard from many writers personally that they plan to submit stories. This is the best way we’ve come up with to avoid reader bias when determining which stories are the best fit for the anthology.
My lovely and talented assistant Fanny will be taking over the submissions email address for the month of December. I won’t even be checking it. She will log the submissions, strip away headers and other identifying information, and forward the emails to Ed’s address and mine with just a number for an identifier.
This is also why open submissions stories need to be in the body of the email — to make it easier to keep track of which story belongs with which ID, and to make it easier to strip identifying information out (while still having it on hand, obviously, so that we can contact you!). And it’s why we don’t want any open submissions stories sneaking through before or after the deadline.
It’s not that we’re making things complicated for complications’ sake. Honest. It’s that we want everyone who sends us a story to have the best possible chance.
